6 Sih Muahn, 6th day in the 13-day Tzi' (Dog) Week
6 Sih Muahn (Chorti'): Black hawk. Glyph of a skull.
6 Tz'ikin (Quiche): Funeral festival
6 Men (Yucatec): To do
6 Cuauhtli (Aztec): Eagle
Direction: West
Note: The Quiche and Yucatec names appear to have become confused over time with the sound of the Chorti day sign. The black hawk or eagle was the creature that brought the serpent out of the sea or lake and mixed its blood with that of a tapir and corn dough (masa) to make the first Mayans, in the Popol Vuh creation story. The tapirs (cimin) symbolize those that ruled the cave that the Mayans escaped from. The serpent (chan) was brought out of the lake by the sih muahn and placed around the (crater) lake to make a rainbow (makchan) that protected the first Mayan people.
Tzi' Week: In this hemisphere, dogs accompanied and guided early people from the north as the only domesticated animal - the earliest companion to humans. Tzi' also represents Sirius, the dog (guide) star. When Venus is not visible it is the brightest object in sky, aside from the sun and moon. Tracking Sirius through the elliptic the Mayans were able to predict precession of the solar system through the galactic elliptic. This is, in part, how the Mayans were able to set their calendar to end one cycle and begin a new cycle in December 2012. Today, Sirius disappears from the sky in April and reappears in the early morning sky in June in Central America. Its reappearance would have been an indicator to plant, just after the rainy season had started.
Sih Muahn in Tzi': Just as the dog and the dog star guided early people, birds like the black hawks guided them during a time of crisis and helped them find safe island homes. These signs are about the security that comes from right relationships with neighbors and from a sustainable relationship with earth and its creatures. Within that safe abode the creativity of human beings is allowed to blossom.
