4 Sutz', 4th day in the 13-day Nok (Thread) Week
4 Sutz' (Chorti'): Bat. Glyph of a stylized bat or chief
4 Junajpu (Quiche) / 4 Ahaw (Yucatec Maya): both mean lord or chief
4 Xochitl (Aztec): Flower
Direction: South
Note: In exactly four tzolkin cycles, 1040 days, this day will fall on the winter solstice, Dec. 21, 2012, marking the end date of the current Mayan long count calendar.
The Mayans and other Mesoamerican peoples came out of two rooms of the Xibalba cave about 11,000 years ago. Three clans came from the jaguar room and three clans from the bat room. The lead clan, the Quiche clan, came out of the bat room. The Cakchiquels, who share the Quiche lineage, are still considered to be bat people. When the Quiches were banished from Tammakchan, the Chortis took over as lead nation and changed this day sign to the generic title of 'lord' and made it the important position as last day in the calendar. Yet the Quiche took the bat sign with them to Mexico where it was morphed into Xochitl by the Aztecs. (sutz =~ xoch). By the time the Quiches returned to Guatemala and El Salvador, they had lost memory of this day as bat day.
The sign carries with it all of the drama of human politics, from the early days as a subject or slave in a cave with bats flying around, to leading the escape of the people, to being overturned from power, only to return again thousands of years later. It is time, after 4,000 years, to return this day to its rightful state, as sutz'.
Nok Week: Nok describes the fine cotton (tinam) thread used in weaving and this week celebrates the ability of humans to utilize plants for clothing and other articles of higher civilization. This week might have been called ihben earlier, meaning earth spirit. It would have been easy to associate the rocking motion of the weaving loom with the rocking motion of the earth during an earthquake. This 13 day week will never have an eclipse, but follows an eclipse period every other tzolkin year. Mars will usually be retrograde every third tzolkin in Nok week. (Mars has a 780 day cycle or three tzolkin cycle.) Mars is retrograde now throughout this week. On the next Nok week (260 days), Mars will be an evening 'star' almost to disappear from the sky. On the Nok week following that, Mars will be a morning 'star'.
Sutz' in Nok Week: Nok week weaves everything together and strips away the drama, since 'everybody' shared the experience of the cave. In the next age, there will be no place for power struggles.
