9 Makchan (Chorti'): Rainbow. Glyph of clouds, rain, and box-like structure.
9 Kawuq (Quiche) / 9 Kawak (Yucatec Maya): both mean rain, rainstorms, or thunder
9 Quiahuitl (Aztec): Rainstorm, linked to the goddess 'Chantico'; goddess of hearth and home
Direction: West
Note: Makchan or 'rainbow' consists of mak, a 'covering' or 'to stop up', and chan is 'snake'. A snake which covers up and stops the rainstorm. This day sign explains the totem of the Chorti' Maya people, which is chan or serpent. Perhaps better thought of as rainbow. One of their first homes was at Tammakchan or 'deep inside the rainbow'. Other Mayans later called this Tamoanchan. Tammakchan is located at Lago Coatepeque in El Salvador. The Mayans escaped the Xibalban cave dwellers by building their first settlement on islands, including on Teopan at Coatepeque. Xibalba means 'men who cannot swim'. The island stopped up the rainstorm of the Xibalban attacks.
Monkey Week: This 13 day week will often have an eclipse every other tzolkin year. If it happens early in the week it may be a full or partial eclipse but if it happens late in the week it is penumbral (minimal), since we are nearing the end of the eclipse period. Monkey is also the only week of the tzolkin where Mars is always retrograde (for at least several hundred years), every third tzolkin (Mars has a 780 day cycle - three tzolkins). Mars is retrograde now. And will be again three Monkey weeks from now. On the next Monkey week (260 days), Mars will be an evening 'star' almost to disappear from the sky. On the Monkey week following that, Mars will be a morning 'star' having recently appeared in the eastern sky before dawn. The Mayans figured this out by 3000 BC although the Mars cycle was about 90 days ahead in the calendar from today due to precision.
Acajutla High Tides: 9:21 AM and 9:55 PM
Semi-diurnal Tide range (Difference in High/Low Tides): 1.22 meters average and at its lowest. The next set of very low tide days will begin in 13 days on the 9th day of Ch'ak week.
